The most dangerous woman in America of her time was a grieving mother, scorned by the conditions that took her family’s life such as a pandemic and constant worker exploitation.
(from wiki) A school teacher, born in Ireland, she changed her name to Mother Jones after her husband and four children died of yellow fever in 1867, and her dress shop was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, she became an organizer for the Knights of Labor and the United Mine Workers union. In 1902, she was called “the most dangerous woman in America” for her success in organizing mine workers and their families against the mine owners. In 1903, to protest the lax enforcement of the child labor laws in the Pennsylvania mines and silk mills, she organized a children’s march from Philadelphia to the home of President Theodore Roosevelt in New York.
Her words, filled with raw pain touches the heart of all that have felt the premature loss of a loved one to capitalism– be it because of racism, militarism, police abuse, ecological devastation that create health problems to those in the population that cannot afford hospitalization and all the costs associated with grave illnesses or accidents and all the other evils that prey on Poor People Everywhere that we fight against.
I think of my comrade Callie Greer in the Poor Peoples Campaign, who tears our hearts when we hear her lament as she testified her lament over the premature loss of her daughter Venus. And the fight that she continues fighting as a mother, not only honoring her daughter but also fighting so that no other parent feels this pain that she carries. And the way we collectively grieve and resolute to continue fighting every time we think of Miss Pam, she is present with us, as an Ancestor in the Movement, her spirit along with others, even Doctor Kings himself rests within our campaign and as the Bible says, crowds of Saints cheer us on our way. I made that work with the idea of giving them their flowers.
Something that touched me this week about Ukraine was seeing a captured young man, a kid in a lot of ways a Russian soldier with a group of Ukrainian moms, calling his own mom whilst the women explained through an interpreter to the Russian mom that her son would be sent home unharmed, the mom weeping called her son “come home son, come home” can you imagine what it would look like if moms of the world would call their sons home. In the campaign we sure can imagine it, we live it.

Sus palabras, crudas, llenas de dolor, tocan el corazón de todo aquel que ha sentido la pérdida prematura de una persona querida ya sea por el militarismo, el abuso policial, la contaminación ambiental que crea grandes problemas de salud a poblaciones que usualmente no pueden pagar por hospitalización y gastos médicos asociados con enfermedades y accidentes graves y todos los males que nos aterran y en los que nosotros estamos en contra. Me pone a pensar sobre mi camarada Callie Greer, que nos desgarra el corazón cuando escuchamos su testimonio, su lamento de la pérdida prematura de su hija Venus, y la lucha que sigue, como madre, no solo honrando la memoria de su hija pero también peleando para que nunca más un padre sienta este dolor que lleva. O la manera que colectivamente sentimos la pérdida y la resolución de seguir peleando cada vez que pensamos en Doña Pam. Las tenemos presentes, como Ancestros en el Movimiento, sus espiritus tal cual como el del Doctor King mismo descansa en cada uno de nosotros en la campaña y como dice la biblia, multitudes de santos nos rodean y alientan en el camino. Hize esta arte para darles sus flores como se dice aqui. Hize flor calendula, o la flor de muerto.
Lo que más me impresionó esta semana de Ukraine fue ver a unas madres que tenían a un niño soldado ruso, las madres llamaron a la madre rusa y le aseguraron que su hijo está a salvo y será mandado a casa, la madre llorando decía ven a casa hijo. Como se vería el mundo si nos preocupáramos por los hijos de nuestros enemigos asi? Y si las mamas del mundo dijeran a sus hijos en guerra ven a casa mijo. En la campaña asi imaginamos y vivimos!
