“A Dios lo De Dios.”// “To God What is God’s.”

Reflections on Matthew 22 for Kairos Center Freedom Church of the Poor. Reflecciones en Mateo 22 para La Iglesia del Pueblo Libre del Centro Kairos.
Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a] to Caesar or not?”But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. Matthew 22:15–22
Today I prefer to share a reflection with you with less theology. In a lot of instances when it comes to Bible based analysis it is very important to understand context, book, language, writer, source and much more because a lot of times this information is inaccessible to people (and also recognizing that the Bible itself is a compilation of Books that share Sacred Text from other Religious practices) we run into theories and theologies that at the end of the day are immoral, harmful and toxic. The video we just watched is a good example of bad takes on the word of God and the true message of Christ’s Gospel as directly prescribed by Jesus’ life and ministry.
The Jesus who drove out money lenders from the temple with a whip.
The Jesus that called religious leaders and their followers whom hypocrites, vipers and ultimately at their hands via state sanctioned violence was tortured, crucified and killed.
The Jesus who begged God to forgive those that killed him to “forgive them for they know not what they have done.”
In the modern context We know what we are doing because not only do we have Holy Scripture to remind us of the mistakes of the past and the victories and resilience of God’s People despite violence and persecution, we also have examples like this passage to guide us so many hundreds of years in the future.
We know that The Church of old grew into a socialist movement, these Spirit filled people sold their possessions, put their wealth together to care for one another AND their community as they preached a gospel of hope and liberation. That is because the church knew that to fill a soul with the Fiery spirit of the Lord, they had to attend to the immediate needs of the community through mutual aid. Fill in the gaps of places and reach The People that the state ignored.
That fact should not mean that the church must be silent as they support their communities, the church as a body is collectively and personally responsible for the conditions of our people. Because besides filling the needs of our communities THE most importantly and most Christ like thing to do is to help AND speak against the state that impoverishes The People.
With that I want to leave you with a short story and a call to action, prayer and ask.

She died shortly after giving birth, leaving four small children in the care of our Friend, who has four children of her own. She worked hard to take care of these beautiful eight children but in the summer she contracted COVID19 and was replaced at her work before even healing. Since losing her job shes been unable to find a new one and due to covid 19 she is unable to find or pay for a childcare provider for eight children under the age of 14. If you know wealthy people of conscience, remember Luke 19 Jesus touched Zacchaeus the tax collector and inspired him to sell his possession and give back in four times the amount of wealth he had taken by way of using the system to abuse those whom the system marginalized. Nowadays our own Caesar only paid 750 on millions of taxes but used our collective wealth to give himself the best medical care money could buy while our People die and practically starve.
WE must do more to speak against the hoarding of wealth and encourage re-distribution to those in need in all aspects of our lives: in our relationships, governments, churches and other organizations.

Entonces salieron los fariseos y tramaron cómo tenderle a Jesús una trampa con sus mismas palabras. Enviaron algunos de sus discípulos junto con los herodianos, los cuales le dijeron: Maestro, sabemos que eres un hombre íntegro y que enseñas el camino de Dios de acuerdo con la verdad. No te dejas influir por nadie porque no te fijas en las apariencias. Danos tu opinión: ¿Está permitido pagar impuestos al césar o no? Conociendo sus malas intenciones, Jesús replicó ¡Hipócritas! ¿Por qué me tienden trampas? Muéstrenme la moneda para el impuesto. Y se la enseñaron. ¿De quién son esta imagen y esta inscripción? — les preguntó. Del césar — respondieron. Entonces denle al césar lo que es del césar y a Dios lo que es de Dios. Al oír esto, se quedaron asombrados. Así que lo dejaron y se fueron. Mateo 22:15–22
Hoy prefiero leer el mensaje dentro del texto y compartir contigo una reflexión con menos teología. En muchos casos, cuando se trata de un análisis basado en la Biblia, es muy importante comprender el contexto, el libro, el idioma, el escritor, la fuente y mucho más porque muchas veces esta información es inaccesible para las personas (y también reconociendo que la Biblia misma es una recopilación de Libros que comparten Texto Sagrado de otras prácticas religiosas) nos topamos con teorías y teologías que al final del día son inmorales, dañinas y tóxicas. El video que acabamos de ver es un buen ejemplo de las malas interpretaciones de la palabra de Dios y del verdadero mensaje del Evangelio de Cristo según lo prescrito directamente por la vida y el ministerio que Jesús mismo vivió.
El Jesús que expulsó a los prestamistas del templo con un látigo.
El Jesús que llamó a los líderes religiosos y sus seguidores, hipócritas, víboras y finalmente en sus mismas manos a través de la violencia sancionada por el estado, fue torturado, crucificado y asesinado.
El Jesús que le rogó a Dios que perdonara a los que lo mataron para “perdonarlos porque no saben lo que han hecho”.
En el contexto moderno, sabemos lo que estamos haciendo porque no solo tenemos las Sagradas Escrituras para recordarnos los errores del pasado y las victorias y la resistencia del Pueblo de Dios a pesar de la violencia y la persecución, tenemos ejemplos como este pasaje para guiarnos a muchos, cientos de años en el futuro.
Sabemos que la Iglesia de antes se convirtió en un movimiento socialista, estas personas llenas del Espíritu vendieron sus posesiones, juntaron sus riquezas para cuidarse unxs a otrxs Y a su comunidad mientras predicaban un evangelio de esperanza y liberación. Eso es porque la iglesia sabía que para llenar un alma con el espíritu ardiente del Dios, tenían que atender las necesidades inmediatas de la comunidad a través de la ayuda mutua primero. Ese hecho no debería significar que la iglesia deba guardar silencio mientras apoyan a sus comunidades, la iglesia como cuerpo es colectiva y personalmente responsable de las condiciones de nuestra gente. Porque además de satisfacer las necesidades, LO más importante y más parecido a Cristo es ayudar si, Y también hablar en contra del estado que empobrece al Pueblo.
Con eso quiero dejarles una historia y un llamado a la acción y oración.
La Iglesia del Pueblo, un grupo de fieles, pobres, marginades pero empoderades y santificades por el Espíritu que buscan reparar la brecha del dolor que la iglesia que en esta Tierra ha remontado por 500 años.
Hoy quiero animar a mi Amiga aquí en VA, cuyo hermano está actualmente detenido en una instalación de ICE en Nueva York. Fue detenido cuando su esposa estaba embarazada de cuatro meses. La esposa que en paz descanse falleció poco después de dar a luz, dejando cuatro niñxs pequeñxs al cuidado de nuestra Amiga, que tiene cuatro hijxs propios. Trabajó duro para cuidar a estes hermosxs ocho niñxs, pero en el verano contrajo COVID19 y fue reemplazada en su trabajo antes incluso de curarse. Desde que perdió su trabajo, no ha podido encontrar uno nuevo y debido al covid 19 no puede encontrar ni pagar un proveedor de cuidado infantil para ocho niñxs menores de 14 años.
Hoy prefiero leer este mensaje de texto y compartir contigo una reflexión con menos teología.
Virtualmente etamos pasando el platillo, para ayudar a nuestra amiga a pagar sus facturas vencidas y el alquiler atrasado. Y done lo que pueda, sabemos que cinco dólares aquí y allá pueden sumar todo lo que necesitan y oro para que juntos podamos derramar bendiciones a esta familia.
